How often should you wash your towel?
There’s no need to throw your towel in the washing machine after every single use. If you’ve showered, used a clean towel, and let it dry properly between uses, it can handle several uses.
A good rule of thumb is to wash it after three to four uses, or at least once a week. But a lot depends on how quickly your towel dries and the conditions you use it in. A damp bathroom without good ventilation is not the same as an airy room where your towel will dry in no time after a shower.
And one more detail: don’t hang your towel wrinkled on a hook or pile it up somewhere. The better it dries between uses, the less suitable environment it creates for microorganisms to multiply. Ideally, spread it out so that air can circulate around it.
A bath towel, a hand towel, and a washcloth are not the same
One rule for all bathroom textiles doesn’t work perfectly.
- The towel comes into contact primarily with a clean body after a shower, so if dried properly, it can last for several uses.
- The hand towel gets a lot more wear and tear during the day. It is used by more people, several times a day, and our hands are not always perfectly clean beforehand, so it needs to be changed more often.
- A washcloth or a small face towel are used in direct contact with the skin when washing - it is ideal to wash them after each or at least every other use.
Why is the towel not completely clean after use?
After a shower, we feel clean, so the towel should be clean too. But when drying it, in addition to water, dead skin cells, sebum and other particles from the skin also end up on it. If you add moisture and time to this, an environment conducive to microorganisms is created.
This does not mean that every towel after one use poses a hygiene problem. However, it is a reason not to leave things to chance and to monitor not only when you wash the towel, but also what you do with it between individual uses.
When is it not enough to just wash a towel?
From time to time, you will encounter a situation where you take a towel out of the washing machine, it smells like it was washed… and after the first use it is musty again. This may be because you are overfilling the washing machine, or because the towel does not have time to dry.

- Do not use fabric softener: It coats the fibers, which causes the towel to lose absorbency and become stale faster. Try a tablespoon of vinegar instead.
- Do not overload the washing machine: Towels need space to rinse well and get rid of powder residues.
- Washable at 60 ° C: This is enough for normal maintenance, higher temperatures destroy the fibers.
Dry immediately: Do not leave wet laundry in the washing machine drum.
However, loss of absorbency, odor or hardening can return even if you wash it correctly. As soon as these signals appear, the towel has seen its best years:
- the towel is no longer as absorbent as before,
- a musty smell remains after washing,
- the material is significantly hardened or, conversely, has lost its structure,
- frayed edges, holes or damaged seams appear.
There is no need to wait for the towel to completely fall apart. A new towel is often much more practical than an endless fight with an old one.
